WUW Philippines

Hello everyone.

It's important with this blog to mention every wrestling promotion, active or not.  This blogger hasn't mentioned this promotion enough.  Going forward, there will be more posts regarding the following promotion.

The oldest, if you want to call five years old, active wrestling promotion is World Underground Wrestling - Philippines.  WUW-PH, for short, is a branch of World Underground Wrestling.  WUW started in the 18th Century, and in France.

Per numerous sources, WUW-PH's first show took place on October 5, 2019.  The show, WUW PH Dojo Storm took place at the Brawl Pit Bulusan in Quezon City, Philippines.

The show was a success with seven matches.  A couple of days after the show, the promotion began putting their matches on You Tube for viewing.

Led by Saint John Martin, the promotion has had some shows.  Prior to the 2020-2021 covid pandemic, WUW-PH did have three shows, roughly one per month.

Slowly but surely, since the return in 2022, WUW - PH has had some shows, the latest being the show, Tagay Na! that took place on July 7th.

WUW-PH does have one championship title currently.  That is the World Underground Wrestling Tag Team Titles currently held by Saint John Martin and Ken Cifer.  The pair won the belts this past December and have defended it successfully several times this year.

Those that have appeared at WUW - PH shows have included wrestlers from the newest wrestling promotion in the country, PUSO Wrestling.  The performers include Saint John Martin, Ken Cifer, Dabid Ravena, Razael, Kanta Terror, Silent D, Zera, Main Maxx, Pinoy Bulldog and more.

This blogger has been to one of their shows which was August of last year.  For those reading this post, I would definitely recommend any wrestling fan to see a show when one is announced again.

Unang Tibok Update #3

Hello everyone!

PUSO Wrestling, as been mentioned over the past couple of weeks, will be having their inaugural show. Unang Tibok, on Saturday, August 17th beginning at 6pm. The location is the Brawl Pit Bulusan in Quezon City, PH.

Up until this post, there will be a Main Event match and four quarter final matches of a tournament.  The tournament of seven matches overall will determine who will be the first Pusong Pinoy Wrestling Champion.

There is one additional match that has been added to the show.  The Jun Capilos Jr. Battle Royal, an over-the top elimination battle royal will feature six wrestlers, all capable of winning the event.

This blogger knows the family from a couple of shows last year.  Jelson and his two daughters have always been supportive in the short time we've known one another.  Thank you to the Capilos family who has supported shows and Pinoy wrestling in general!

The wrestlers involved in the match are Fabio Makisig, Patricia Ligaya, Dabid Ravena, Ken Cifer, Danny Zamora and Brother Benny.

For more information on the show, including tickets (which are still available), please visit the PUSO Wrestling page on Facebook.  PUSO Wrestling can also be found on social media platforms such as Instagram, X and You Tube.

If anyone is interested in sponsoring for the upcoming show, please email PUSO Wrestling at pusowrestling@gmail.com for more details.  Thank you.

A Look Back

Hello everyone!

This post either was deleted or the blogger never posted it.  In either case, my apologies that this happened.

In the middle with Ken Cifer (l) and Steve The Teacher (now AFAM Steve).  The Meet And Greet was a blast!

Last year, on Monday, August 21, there was a wrestling show sponsored by Dexcon and WUW-Philippines.  The show featured wrestlers from World Underground Philippines, Manila Wrestling Federation, Singapore Pro Wrestling, APAC Wrestling (Malaysia) and a wrestler who formerly wrestled for Middle Kingdom Wrestling in China.

The day featured a Meet and Greet as well as a wrestling show at the Brawl Pit Bulusan.  There were five matches on the show.  Here are the results from memory....

Robin Sane d, Zera.

Ken Cifer d. Steve The Teacher.

Dabid Ravena d. Razael in a Hardcore Match.

Alexis Lee d. Poppy, Crystal and Chelsea Marie in, what turned out to be a four way for the SPW Queen Of Asia Championship.

Crystal, St. John Martin, The Machine and Ken Cifer d. Poppy, Jake De Leon, Dabid Ravena and Kojio Akumu.

Note: Alexis Lee was the special guest referee and did a superb job at it!

This fan had a blast at the show.  It was the first time visiting the Brawl Pit Bulusan in Quezon City.  Though a small venue, it was perfect for the show.   The adjoining restaurant, Onyang's Place serves good food and drinks.  This fan remembers the great quesadillas and what, I believe, was San Miguel Beer that was brought into the venue!

It is nearly a year since this has happened.  How time flies!

The next World Underground Wrestling - Philippines show is called Tagay Na!  The event will take place on Sunday, July 7th, 6pm bell time, at the Brawl Pit Bulusan in Quezon City.

There will be more information coming out soon regarding the show.  There has been one match made for the show so far.

Kanto Terror, who returned at the Dexcon Decada show in May, will join forces with Razael.  The group now known as High Proof will take on Turn Zero Kill (Ken Cifer and SJM) for the WUW Tag Team Championship in a Tornado Tag Team - No Disqualification match.

If you look at the top of the post, this blogger added information on ticket prices for the show.  For more information, please see the World Underground Wrestling Philippines - WUW Philippines page on Facebook.  This blogger has also added the link listed below so you can click it to go there.  Thank you and hope you'll be there for the exciting action of Pinoy Wrestling!

MWF Kasaysayan 2023 Flashback

Hello everyone.

As part of the ten year anniversary of the modern day Philippines wrestling, here were the results of last year's MWF Kasaysayan event.  The venue was the Fitness Playground PH. on Sunday, March 5th.

Danny Zamora d. Main Maxx.

Nigel San Jose and Fabio Makisig d. Jake De Leon and Ken Warren.

Crystal d. Aaron Liwanag.

Fabio Makisig d. Migs Valdez in a non title bout.

Jake de Leon d. Ken Warren in Jake's 100th career match.

Chilly Willy Wrestling Cup:

Ken Cifer d. Zera.

Razael d. Ace Clark.

Dabid Ravena d. Pablo Salvacion.

El Kapitunero d. Dante Guinoo.

Ken Cifer d. Razael.

Dabid Ravena d. El Kapitunero

Ken Cifer d. Dabid Ravena.

Sunny Z vs. Bro. Jonar Liwanag.

There were a lot of memories that happened that day.  First off, this was the first MWF event of the year, and it happened at the Fitness Playground PH., I believe for the first time.

The first Chilly Willy Wrestling Cup took place with Ken Cifer winning it.  There were a total of 13 matches that day, probably a Manila Wrestling Federation record for one show.

Fabio Makisig would wrestle in a match for the first time after winning the MWF Pinoy Wrestling Championship.

Jake De Leon would wrestle his tag team partner, Ken Warren in what would be Jake's 100th wrestling match.  Also, the event would be the last time that Ken Warren would wrestle in the Philippines.  Ken is now living in Canada and still wrestling for a promotion currently.

Kyushu Pro Wrestling

On Sunday, April 14th, Manila Wrestling Federation will be holding their next show, MWF Kasaysayan in cooperation with Kyushu Pro Wrestling.  The event will be held at the UP Film Institute Media Center in UP Dillman.

Other than former WWE wrestler, Tajiri, who will be in a main event, hardly did this fan know of the rest of the roster.

Earlier today, I watched a match on You Tube between Naoki Sakurajima and Hitamaru Sasaki in a recent singles match. The two wrestlers will be taking on WOW Tag Team Champions, Saint John Martin and Ken Cifer in a championship match.

There were several things that impressed me.  First off, early in the singles match, it reminded me of the early days of watching wrestling in the Territory Era.  There was actual wrestling in this match as there was with two quality competitiors back in the day.  The match was nearly 20 minutes long with the result ending in a draw.  However, it was a little controlled but exciting.

I'm not saying that I don't like how the product is today with the acrobatic skills, high flying and sometimes crazy maneuvers.  However, matches like Naoki Sakurajima and Hitamaru Sasaki need to happen more often.

The other thing that stood out was the fact that there were a lot of young fans there.  The young fans are what helps make the product great and they are the future fans going forward.

Kyushu Pro Wrestling is on You Tube and on Facebook.  I don't speak Japanese but looking at their Facebook page and their website, they have a busy schedule.  The MWF Kasaysayan event is on there.

For fans who have never seen Kyushu Pro Wrestling and are looking to familiarize themselves with the wrestlers, please check their You Tube page of their recent matches.  I believe the fans are in for a great time at the UP Film Institute.

MWF Kasaysayan Show Update #3

Since last posting on the MWF Kasaysayan show, there have been two matches added.  The event will be held on Sunday, April 14th at 4:30pm at the UP Film Institute Media Center.

Both matches will feature stars from the Manila Wrestling Federation and Kyushu Pro Wrestling in Japan.

Tajiri and Fabio Makisig will take on Aso-San and Jomar.

and

Saint John Martin and Ken Cifer (C) vs. Naoki Sakurajima and Hitamaru Sasaki for the WUW Tag Team Championship.

This show is lining up to be one of the best, if not the best shows ever in the Philippines.  For more on the show, including tickets, please check the ticket2me.net website as well as the Manila Wrestling - MWF page on Facebook.  Thank you.

Wrestle Storm Update

Dexcon's event, Wrestle Storm, will take place the weekend of Saturday/Sunday, March 23-24th.

Matchmaker, Linus Santos, who is becoming one of the top matchmakers in the region, has come up with another tag team match for the March 24th show!

The team of Oro Plata Mata (MWF Pinoy Wrestling Champion, Jake De Leon and teammate, Dabid Ravena) will face the Calamari Drunken Kings (Chris Brookes and Masahiro Takanashi) in the second of two tag matches.

CDK as they are known, and as of this post, are the SPW Southeast Asia Tag Team Champions.  The team has wrestled throughout portions of Southeast Asia and has been a team to reckon with.

This is not to sell Oro Plata Mata short.  The Pinoy Wrestling fans, particularly at Manila Wrestling Federation shows know the capability of Jake De Leon and Dabid Ravena.  They are excellent singles wrestlers.  I've been told by sources that the two have tagged on occasions.  If I were CDK, this is a team not to be overlooked.

The other tag team match is for the WUW International Tag Team Championship.  TZK (Saint John Martin and Ken Cifer) will put the titles on the line against reunited Gemini Kings (ROMEO and Main Maxx).

There will be a Meet and Greet on Saturday, March 23rd at 12 noon at Unbox Greenhills.  The wrestling show will take place on Sunday, March 24th at Brawl Pit Bulusan in Quezon City at 6pm.

For more information on the show and tickets, please check the Dexcon page on Facebook!  Tickets are going well.

Dexcon Wrestle Storm Update

A few hours ago, there was a major announcement regarding Dexcon Wrestle Storm's next show.  The event will take place on Saturday/Sunday, March 23-24.  More on this later in the post.

The announcement began with my friend, Linus Santos.  The announcement was turned over to WWE Hall Of Famer, and one of this fan's favorite wrestlers in Tito Santana!  Tito looked great in the video and hopefully, he's enjoying life after the great years he had in WWE.

Anyway, TZK (Ken Cifer and Saint John Martin) will defend the WUW International Tag Team Championship for the first time at the event.  Their opponents will be a very familiar tag team in Philippines pro wrestling history.

The Gemini Kings (R O M E O and Main Maxx) will be reuniting to take on TZK.

For those who are wondering about the two tag teams, here is some history regarding both teams.

TZK have been part of World Underground Wrestling - Philippines for several years.  Ken Cifer and Saint John Martin have trained together and probably have faced one other in matches.  Last month, at the 2023 Noche Buena Show, TZK won the WUW International Tag Team title from Zera and Umezawa.  Zera was a last minute replacement for Sansyu who was unable to fly in from Vietnam the day of the event.

The Gemini Kings were the last of the Philippine Wrestling Revolution tag team champions.  Under Main Maxx and SANDATA, the team won the PWR titles from The KakaiBros (Kh3ndrick & Mh4rckie) on January 26, 2020.  The event was held at the PMC Spotlight Theater in Makati.  The team would hold the belts until July 31 when they left PWR.  Per some info from Cagematch, Main Maxx and ROMEO have been a tag team since July 2019.

Regarding the weekend, this is the details I have so far.  On Saturday, March 23rd, there will be a Meet And Greet at Unbox Greenhills beginning at 12 noon.

On Sunday, March 24th, the show will take place at 6pm at the Brawl Pit Bulusan.  More on both the events will be in future posts.  Please check the Dexcon and World Underground Wrestling - Philippines pages for further updates.

Final Thoughts On WUW - Philippines

This blogger would like to share his final thoughts on World Underground Wrestling - Philippines for 2023.

Realizing that WUW - Philippines doesn't get as much ink on my blog as it should, still, the promotion needs to be recognized.

Led by a very talented performer in Saint John Martin, the promotion put on a great show with Dexcon being a major contributor in August of this year.  The show, as well as the meet and greet with wrestlers throughout the Philippines and some of Southeast Asia was great!  It was this fan's first taste of a meet and greet in Southeast Asia and it was very memorable.

Having the show at the Brawl Pit Bulusan in Quezon City was really cool too.  The fans are right on top of the action which made the show even better.  What this fan liked was the cafe next to the venue called the S. Brewed Cafe.  The food was really good and something I would recommend to someone that is making a day of the show activities.

WUW - Philippines will be having their next show in March 2024 sponsored by Dexcon once again.  This blogger will have continual updates on who will appear.  The show is called WrestleStorm on it will take place on March 24th.

Finally, regarding WUW - Philippines, congratulations to Ken Cifer and Saint John Martin for winning the WUW Tag Team Championship at the 2023 Noche Buena show.

Now Officlal!

In the last post, this fan mentioned that there may be a possible tag team title match for the upcoming MWF show.

Now, it is official!  The World Underground Wrestling Tag Team Titles will be on the line at the 2023 Manila Wrestling Federation Noche Buena show.  The date is Sunday, December 3rd at the PMC Spotlight Theater in Circuit Makati.

The team of Umezawa and Sansyu from Japan,  the WUW Tag Team Champions will take on Saint John Martin and Ken Cifer in what will be another great match on the show.

Unfortunately, I don't have very much info on the tag team champions.  Sansyu debuted in pro wrestling back in November 2007 (16 years ago.).

Umezawa's career, I believe, goes back to March 2010 from what this fan has found.  Definitely, the two are experienced in the ring.

Definitely, this will be a great test for Saint John Martin and Ken Cifer, both with WUW - Philippines.

Regarding tickets, once again, there are just a few General Admission tickets left for the show.  However, as always, please do not take my word for it.  Please check the Manila Wrestling Federation - MWF page on Facebook for more information.  Thanks again.

MWF Noche Buena Update #5

There has been one match added to the Manila Wrestling Federation 2023 Noche Buena show.  The event will take place on Sunday, December 3rd.  Location is the PMC Spotlight Theater in Circuit Makati beginning at 4:30pm.  Doors will open at 4pm.

This match will definitely be a good one.  Both wrestlers, training partners, and with World Underground Wrestling - Philippines will be in a tag team match.

Saint John Martin and Ken Cifer will team up against a team yet to be named.  This is a correction from what I posted earlier.

In recent action at the Road To Fate show in August, both Martin and Ken took on tough opponents and won.  Martin defeated Migs Valdez in one singles match while Ken defeated Dabid Ravena in another singles encounter.  Whoever they will face could be in for a tough evening.

General Admission tickets for the event are still available but are moving quickly.  Please continue to check the Manila Wrestling Federation - MWF page on ticket availability and updates!

Interview #2 - Steve Hershkowitz

Steve Hershkowitz may not be a household name to those who watch WWE and AEW today.

However, to this fan, Steve is what wrestling is all about!  Back before the pandemic set in worldwide, off and on, I would be watching videos of promotions in Asia.  Middle Kingdom Wrestling was one of the promotions.

It was cool seeing how Steve and the reaction of the fans!  And watching him in matches, he was pretty good.

This blogger had a chance to meet him at a Meet And Greet for World Underground Wrestling Philippines last August and the wrestling show that followed.  Steve was making a return to the ring after a two year absence.  It looked like he hadn't missed a beat either.

Also, Steve has a book out called Class In Session! This blogger has a copy of the book and has read it.  You can a copy through Amazon.  Please check it out!

Thank you to Steve for doing this.  Hopefully, wrestling fans will see him in a ring again very soon!

Wayne - When you started following pro wrestling, who was your favorite promotion?

Steve:  I came to become a wrestling fan by happenstance. As a 10-year old boy, I was channeling surfing and landed on a live WWWF card from MSG on Sports Channel. For a period of time WWWF was the only game in town. Don’t ask me how - but somehow I learned about a California-based wrestling show that aired late night on Tuesday evenings on a New Jersey Spanish UHF channel. Shortly thereafter, I was able to watch Mid-Atlantic Wrestling on a cable channel emanating out of Buffalo, New York. Georgia Championship Wrestling on TBS was my next discovery. While enjoyed the options available to me, WWWF was my favorite promotion.

Wayne:  Who was your favorite wrestler early as a fan?

Steve:  WWWF…Chief Jay Strongbow Mid-Atlantic…Ric Flair GCW…The Fabulous Freebirds.

Wayne:  Steve, who trained you before becoming a pro wrestler?

Steve:  My initial trainers were Jon Dahmer and Eddie Valentine at the CZW Dojo. I was also trained by Jeff Rocker, Les Morgan, and Big Slam at various points.

Wayne:  You wrestled for several years, some of it with Middle Kingdom Wrestling. What was your favorite match that you were involved in?

Steve:  While I do have several favorite matches, I have more favorite moments/spots. A lot of those moments revolve around fan interaction. I think my favorite USA moment was when I was wrestling in an EWA show in Jackson, New Jersey. The front row was occupied by inebriated bachelor party guests. It was the first time I got face pops as a heel. In China, the highlight would be my extended feud with Wang Tao, but I also had memorable matches with Zombie Dragon, Curry Kid, and Black Mamba.

Wayne:  You made a return to the ring with World Underground Wrestling - Philippines. How did you feel during the match with Ken Cifer and how you felt afterwards.

Steve:  Let’s start with how I felt before the match. I was very nervous because not only was this a new promotion for me, but also because I was coming off a two-year layoff. During the match I gassed literally in the first minute.

Ken really carried me through the match, and I will always respect him for that. Afterwards I felt a combination of jubilation and sheer exhaustion. I had two different people suggest I allow the medical staff to take my blood pressure.

Wayne:  I've asked this question with the Southeast Asia wrestlers. How do you feel right now with the improvement in the Southeast Asia promotions? Are they going in the right direction?

Steve:  Honestly, I have pretty much only worked for MKW in China other than one match for WLW (also in China) before debuting in WUW. It was truly a pleasure being involved with both groups.

Wayne:  Finally, your thoughts on pro wrestling as a whole today? Is it the Golden Age that some people believe?

Steve:  I believe that professional wrestling as a whole is experiencing a resurgence. Between Triple H taking creative control, the presence of AEW, and even NXT are definitely all positive things for the business in my opinion.

World Underground Wrestling - Philippines

There is a third wrestling promotion in the Philippines known as World Underground Wrestling - Philippines.

The promotion is based at the Brawl Pit Bulusan in Quezon City. Philippines.

Wrestlers such as St. John Martin, Dabid Ravena, Razael, Ken Cifer and Zera hugely make up as part of the promotion.
